Our Little Peg People Family
I'm not 100% sure where I first
came across this idea because so many blogs have done it--The Small
Object, Salt & Chocolate, SouleMama, Let's Explore, Posie Gets Cozy. You can even
buy a custom set that looks like your family at LoveMonkey
and a few other shops on Etsy. But Huck adores all his gnomes so I knew this would be a hit
and decided to try some homemade little people of my own.
I bought my little people wood pegs online from Casey's Wood where they are called "People Turnings." I also hear that some craft stores carry them, but they're called "Game Pieces." I used cheap acrylic paints and the gave them a nice gloss with a non-toxic semi-gloss varnish--both purchased on my big city afternoon at Hobby Lobby in Albuquerque.
I also really liked what Mary Beth over at Salt and Chocolate did with hers so I made a few character ones as well since Huck loves pirates and clowns.

This isn't everyone to be sure--Just Jazz & Pop (my parents), Julia (our niece who babysat this summer), and Owen (a little friend of Huck's). I've given my parents contact lenses because I'm not sure I can make glasses look right. And oops, I only just noticed that Julia doesn't have any arms--sorry 'bout that sweetie. His vast collection of Aunties will be next.
Huck hasn't actually seen the extra people yet but he's been carrying the nuclear family around with him for days and sleeps with them under his wee little pillow. He LOOOVES them!
It's a fun craft and a good old fashioned type toy.
