Our mailbox is about a 1/4 mile walk from the house and he usually goes with Daddy in the late afternoon while I make dinner. Little guy carried that first letter all the way home, unopened, to show me. He was absolutely thrilled.
One of his Frog and Toad books has a story called The Letter that he loves. So, while he's used to getting packages of goodies from time to time, I thought a letter would feel different and special to him. While my parents were visiting I mentioned to my Mom that I thought Huck would really enjoy getting some mail.
She came through big time. She hit a card sale and stocked up on a bunch of cute, sweet and cheap little cards, got some cartoon stamps at the post office and bought some sheets of stickers to send as an added treat. Here's Huck's first letter.
How freaking cute is that? He got another one yesterday and was just as smitten.
Anyway, thought I'd relay the story because I think it's a great way to involve far away family in a child's life. It's really easy to write a quick "letter" to a toddler or young child, and the emotional pay-off for the child is huge--as much, if not more, than a gift because it feels so grown up.
